e-Book Finished! Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka | 20 May 2011
So here it is! After many hours carefully designing and crafting it, I present you with my first proper e-Book in an EPUB and interactive PDF format.
About the Author
Franz Kafka is a German novelist whose work has been widely studied and translated around the world. He was born in 1883 in Prague, Czech Republic, and worked as a factory worker, insurance officer and writer. He died at the age of 40 in June 1924, in Kierling, of tuberculosis. During his short lifetime his writing attracted little attention and most of his work was published posthumously.
The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung), first published in 1915, was Kafka’s only novella he wrote and one of the few works published during his lifetime. The text has been interpreted many times and has found its way into many universities’ core literature texts.
This e-Book was created as a project for the Digital Publishing module for the MA Publishing degree at Oxford Brookes University by Paul Christopher Daniels, with the expert help of Chris Jennings.
About the Project
I selected this text from Project Gutenberg’s library of public domain text as I really wanted to read this book. It came from a plain text file from their website, which I then put into MS Word to ove unwanted paragraph breaks using the find and replace function.
The next step was to put it into Adobe InDesign, where I flowed the text in and added character and paragraph styles. I also added illustrations, which I created in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, using images that I found on Flickr under Creative Commons licences. These image credits can be found under the credits chapter.
The images were added with static captions (using metadata I added in Photoshop) and then placed in the text using a paragraph style I created specifically for images. Metadata was also added to the e-Book itself in InDesign and then exported as an EPUB file.
Lastly, hand-coding and error corrections were done in Oxygen XML Editor. To finalise the project I validated the e-Book online at Threepress Consulting’s EPUB validation service in order to achieve an industry standard for the publication.
About the Files:
The EPUB works both in Adobe Digital Editions and the EPUB Reader add-on in Firefox browsers. In Digital Editons, the EPUB is best viewed with the font size turned down by one size, in the font display settings, and at fullscreen. When the size is turned to maximum, the cover displays in the correct proportion, but the title page splits over two pages - although the spacing was adjusted to compensate for this.The file is best viewed, overall, in EPUB reader in Firefox as it displays as it was intended.
The interactivity in the PDF document was added in InDesign. The pdf automatically opens in the "fit page" view and you can click the first two pages (cover and title page) to go to the next pages. You can navigate to specific chapters by clicking on the titles in the contents page. Also, there are arrows to move forwards and backwards as well as a "TOC" arrow to take you to the table of contents whenever you want.

There is a critical stage in ebook writing where I think a lot of people just give up and either shelve the project or give it away for free out of lack of self-confidence.When the ebook is actually “written”, but not quite “done” is where I suspect a lot of people stop.
Having created a few epubs myself don’t you find the process really frustrating, I use indesign and liquid xml editor (http://www.liquid-technologies.com/xml-editor.aspx) to validate my xml but it can be a real pain when you’ve got, say 50 odd chapters to go through. Hopefully some bright software developer will spot a gap in the market and develop an all in one tool.
